Science

Purpose

A high quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world around us. Pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science, building an understanding while developing a sense of excitement and curiosity.
The importance of science is reflected in its place as a core subject in the curriculum.

Aims

The National Curriculum (NC) for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
 

• Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
• Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
• Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
   

Through our science curriculum, we will encourage the students to develop a positive attitude towards science. It is planned and resourced to enable children to experience a wide range of scientific investigations. These will help pupils to develop a scientific approach to learning and acquire the necessary skills. Activities are related to their everyday experiences and their science learning is linked to many other areas of the curriculum.
Predicting, observing, measuring, recording, planning, decision-making, asking, researching, concluding, evaluating, and cooperating are just some of the skills they will develop and hone. These will provide them with knowledge and the investigative know-how to succeed in science in their secondary provision, no matter where that may be. Moreover these skills are life skills and will help them in areas outside their education.

Programme of Study

the new NC2014, science programme has been organised and adapted to fit our school and to suit our pupils. Years 1/3/4/5 are following our new science programme and from September2015 all our pupils will follow this scheme.

The new science curriculum has been divided into two elements: Scientific Knowledge and Working Scientifically, though one is taught through the other. Through both elements, pupils develop skills and consolidate their understanding. They reinforce their learning through practicalfocussed activities and trigger their curiosity to learn more.

Scientific Knowledge (SK) is composed of units of study that can be categorized as Biology, chemistry aqnd Physics. each year group will study the units consistent with the year group they are in; thereby ensuring their learning is progressive.
The Working Scientifically (WS) element is cobered through the teaching of scientific knowledge in topics. It is delivered at a level individual pupils are capable of. Opportunities to carry out experiments and complete practical investigations are afforded in all scientific knowledge areas across all three disciplines biology, chemistry and physics. As a consequence pupils recognise that their exploration and investigative skills are transferable and they acquire a more rounded experience with a fuller understanding of the world and the processes around them.

Assessment

Each individual pupil's achievements, both in WS and SK, are identified through assessment. These achievements are recorded, monitored and tracked thereby allowing any issues to be identified and confronted in order that progress is maintained.
